Dublin based RocketJobs.ie is delighted to announce that it is partnering with Primary Position, the Limerick SEO specialists, for SEO services. Primary Position was selected after an extensive process which Primary Position emerged from as the front runner despite being the only non-Dublin based firm considered. “Primary Position’s innovative partnership approach was a refreshing departure from the norm which we felt really showed an interest in our business” said Derek Hardiman, RocketJobs founder.

Primary Position will be working to increase visitors to the site which is already growing in popularity by raising its profile and expanding the site’s visibility. “We are specialists in Search Engine Optimisation and this is our sole focus.

With the continuing rise of Twitter in Ireland and some great examples of how if can be used effectively for “real stuff”, like twitter.com/twecipe (hats off to twitter.com/niallharbison for leading the way), we are introducing job searching via Twitter. Here’s how it works:

Follow twitter.com/rocketjobs

If we’re not already following you we’ll auto-follow you back

Once that’s done you can send a direct message to rocketjobs like this: D java developer

We’ll DM you back with some results like this “Try this - Senior J2EE Software Developer (http://www.rocketjobs.ie/job/1288)“

Why use direct messages? Well, we don’t think you want the world to see what jobs you’re searching for! If you do a regular tweet to twitter.com/rocketjobs it’ll just be ignored and hopefully the rest of the Twitterverse will cast a blind eye too.

We hope you like this new capability and we’d love to have your feedback or ideas on how it might be made better. We’re working on some enhancements already and hope to have these available for you soon. We’re also planning on adding some more Web 2.0 features generally, but in the meantime enjoy and spread the word like only Twitter can!

Their idea is that the cost of interviewing people (getting people lined up to do the interviews, get meeting rooms, travel time for candidates, etc.) can be drastically reduced, particularly in the first round, by doing it by video.

This isn’ t a case of you doing a video conference. Instead when you apply for a job you may get sent an email from the employer or agency with a link to go and do an interview. You are provided with a list of questions and in some cases a time limit to answer the questions and a closing date for submitting your interview which you record with your webcam and then submit.

This is definitely an innovative approach and in the current market it will make employers’ lives easier but I don’t think it will be embraced so quickly by job seekers. Am I wrong? Having said that, right now though it’s an employer’s market so you don’t really have a whole lot of choice if you want the role. So, if you get a video interview request remember to check for the spinach between your teeth before you hit “send”!

As many of you probably know, RecruitIreland announced an offer for employers in Limerick on the heels of the Dell announcement. They will provide free job postings for any employer in Limerick. Credit where credit’s due - that’s a very nice gesture.

This got us thinking and the more we considered it the more we thought - why just Limerick? Granted, Limerick has been dealt a body blow and anything that helps get people back to work is commendable, but everyone is hurting at the moment.

So, with that in mind, we have decided that we will offer ANY employer in Ireland three free postings on RocketJobs.ie. All you have to do is go to the site and register as an employer if you’re not already signed up. Once that’s done we’ll apply three posting credits to your account that you can use immediately.

If this helps get one person back to work we feel it will have been worth it.

I’ve done a lot of hiring over the years while working for a variety of companies and that’s given me the pleasure (?) of seeing the good, the bad and the darn right ugly when it comes to CVs. If there’s one way of making sure your application ends up in the bin, send in a rubbish CV. There are plenty of good resources on the web advising on how best to structure your CV. For starters you can check out our CV tips on RocketJobs.ie, but recently I also came across CV Cafe. They’re definitely worth checking out.

One additional point - when applying online for a job a lot of people just hit the “Apply” button and attach their CV. That’s just not good enough. You need to stand out, so treat it like an old fashioned application. In the message or email box write a brief message outlining why you want the role and how your skills and experience match what is required. Sell yourself! If you don’t, the plethora of other candidates will. The first thing a recruiter or employer will see is the email message, so if it looks professional and well thought out they’re much more likely to open your CV.

Good job hunting!
